Special FAQs for Couples

Housing for couples for shorter periods (less than 2 to 3 months) is generally limited to one of our KITP ‘guest’ quarters (see below). Less often, we can get use of a condominium or apartment for a single month to six weeks.

Note: If you are planning to travel on a visa, then the Housing Coordinator will need confirmation that you have obtained your visa in order to confirm housing. If your visa is pending, and you wish to confirm housing, you may need to pay a non-refundable deposit to protect the rental provider from unexpected vacancy if you are unable to obtain your visa.

KITP housing is less expensive than most commerical housing, but you will need be prepared to pay rent *upon arrival* in either cash or traveler's checks. If you will need to use a credit card, then a hotel or motel, or vacation rental, is the more realistic option for you. KITP cannot pay your rent for you, nor can KITP provide funds to you upon arrival to use for rent.

The cost for KITP rentals suitable for couples ranges from a low of $1,600 (not many of these) to about $2,800, for most 'guest' apartments, and from $1,800 to $3,000 for most condominiums and apartments. What we can offer for your visit will depend on other visitors who are housed before and after your visit, since rental providers ask us to ‘line up’ a series of visitors to keep their rental occupied as much as possible.

Here is a general description of KITP 'guest' rentals:

Guest Quarters/Apartments

“Guest quarters" consist of privately owned rental units scattered throughout the area. There are different types, as described below. Most have been rented primarily to KITP visitors for several years.

"Guest cottages" are smaller, separate units, either ‘studio’ style, or with a bedroom, living area, bathroom, and a kitchenette. The kitchenette can be part of the living area or behind folding doors. A kitchenette may have a stove, but usually has just a microwave, coffeemaker, small refrigerator and a sink area. "Guest apartments" are similar, but are attached to the main house or garage.

Guest units are generally a bit farther from campus and sometimes require the use of a car. Prices range from about $1,600 (not many of these) to $2,800 per month. Some units have special amenities, such as views. All guest quarters are fully furnished, including linens, towels and dishes. Some, but not all, have a telephone. Very few have TV. Guest units are generally not available for less than a full month's rental.

Note: If you indicated ‘No’ to the smoking question on your housing application then it is expected that you do not smoke at all, even outside your housing. Rental providers with non-smoking rentals do not want the smell of smoke on renters’ clothes, or smoking materials discarded in or around their rental. If you did indicate ‘no’ to smoking, and then you do smoke, you will be asked to move out immediately, probably to a hotel or motel.

Online Rental Sites

Many recent visitors to KITP have had very good results looking at online rental sites. It is advantageous to our visitors to review these sites and to do so as early as possible. The KITP Housing Coordinator is available to answer questions about listings that you find, to facilitate communication with the rental providers, and can sometimes go look at a listing that interests the visitor.
