TEACHERS'
CONFERENCES
The KITP hosts an annual one-day conference in conjunction with an on-going program, designed to introduce high school
science teachers to the latest discoveries and ideas in science.
Leading scientists describe recent research and interact informally
with the teachers. Approximately 120 teachers attend this exciting event from
all over the country. Some financial support is available,
and attendance is very competitive. The conference planned for Spring 2006 will focus on nanoscience and quantum computing. Responses from teachers have been uniformly enthusiastic, describing a re-energizing experience lasting all year.
HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICS ENRICHMENT
This successful new program provides opportunities for KITP postdocs to make presentations in local high school physics classes, and to contribute to programs for teens in local museum programs, such as the Quasars to Sea Stars program at the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History.
OUTREACH TO HUMANITIES
Building on the interdisciplinary approach to science at the institute and UC Santa Barbara, the KITP hosts conferences that foster interaction between the humanities and sciences. The Templeton Lectures in 2002 were presented to packed audiences. In 2005, the Science, Theater, Audience, Reader (STAR): Theoretical Physics in Drama and Narrative conference brought together playwrights, literature and drama scholars, novelists, biographers, science journalists and actors to explore the means by which science concepts are conveyed to the public in a variety of media. The STAR conference was sponsored by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, and made widely available on local television station 21.
