History

The KITP has been in operation since 1979 on the Santa Barbara Campus of the University of California. The KITP is a unique facility, largely supported by the National Science Foundation and UCSB. Its innovative mode of operation—a small distinguished faculty interacting with a large group of visiting colleagues—has been widely imitated at other research centers, such as the Isaac Newton Institute at Cambridge University in England and the Mathematical Science Research Institute at Berkeley. The KITP’s success derives from its ability to attract the world’s leading scientists to its programs where new collaborations are formed that move fields forward.

Location
